[ ooc; asgard: relationship explanation / opt-out ]
Two years into our time in game together, after tireless months of pushing and pulling at these characters to get them to overcome their Times magazine omnibus of issues, Adi, Kami, and I have made the decision to move Morgana, Merlin, and Arthur into a polyamorous relationship. This has the potential to be confusing, alarming, and possibly triggery for some people, so this post is to explain our reasoning behind this decision and give people the opportunity to opt out of any mentions of the relationship if that would make them more comfortable.
There is a very long, indepth explanation here if you want to sit down for a 2600 word storytime written from my phone aha but I'm going to try to keep it shorter here.
Basically what it boils down to is that Arthur has built his life in Asgard around Morgana and Merlin, both of whom are incredibly important people to him even in canon. These are the two people that have shaped Arthur's morals and values and the ideals that he fights for every day. They are his sense of self and they are his home; he's kind of unhealthily dependent on them being around. Asgard has become his last-ditch attempt at a happiness they will never achieve in Camelot, and as such, he is accepting the fact that he loves these two people and they love him back in return.
This won't be happening immediately and it will not, by any means, be an easy thing for him to come to terms with, let alone act out on, but our goal is to let it happen eventually if we can.
This relationship will involve half-sibling incest. This can squick/trigger people for obvious reasons, which is why we want to take the time to explain our reasoning and give people the opportunity to opt out if they want to. There are absolutely no hard feelings for this and we will keep everything strictly confidential between the three of us to ensure your safety. At no time will we be posting explicit material on any of the game comms, though we will label anything that might have elements of their relationship in them. If you would like to opt out of hearing any mentions of the relationship, please let us know here or in a PM/PP/email/etc. We will always always respect these wishes to the very best of our abilities.
In order to understand Arthur and Morgana's relationship, it's important to know that they grew up together as each other's only childhood friend in a royal household. They lived around fifteen years relying on each other and loving each other before knowing that they were related in any way. This information was only revealed to them in series 3, by which point they were approximately twenty-three and twenty-five respectively, which means they'd've been in love with each other for probably five or more years before learning the truth. This relationship is canon, even though Merlin made a proper job of trying to erase all traces of it in the writing for later seasons because oh no, we can't do that in a family-oriented show!
Rubbish, I tell you.
Arthur and Morgana being lovers is a tradition prevalent in near all Arthurian legend and, because it was at one point present in the show, Adi and I have elected to incorporate this in their backstory. This history of going to incredible and at times even treasonous lengths for each other is part of what fuels their actions now in their fight to overcome their differences and forgive each other their mistakes. Their love is nothing innocent or pure and it is nothing easy to live with either. They are still trying to come to terms with their affections, so it may very well be a long time before anything ever actually happens between them.
Still, we understand anyone's reservations over the matter and we wholly respect anyone's wishes to be uninvolved. Please let us know if you ever want us to keep mentions of their relationship away from your characters and we will, as promised, keep everything properly labelled in game.
